Customer Rating: Summary: Roxio Creator 2009 Comment: ROXIO Creator 2009
Introduction
With Roxio Creator 2009, a new front end menu is added. From this menu you choose the feature you want to use. The left side of the menu lists the main areas:
Data-Copy
Video-Movies
Music Audio
Photo
There is also a Home selection that lists the recent six sub-features used as well as an Online connection. Each item opens a list of categories in the right side panel. It looks nice, but is a little vague, not clear what you are going to do in a category. Between some categories it is not clear what the differences are - for example in Video-Movies there is Create DVDs and Create DVDs Advanced. If you hover over the category it will tell you that the advanced lets you customize the DVD. The interface to the rest of the package is not always smooth. Usually you end up opening a different Roxio package. The layout among the packages is not consistent; navigation can be hard for the uninitiated. For example, if you pick Data-Copy and them Burn Data Disc, a new window opens to collect all the files to burn to the media. But there is no exit for that window. If you pick another item from the left navigation section you can exit the Burn process. If you pick Burn Data Disc - Advanced, Roxio Creator Classic opens. A good feature to support Blue Ray has been added but not having that hardware I could not evaluate it.
Installation
It takes quite awhile to install the package, as did version 9. The install process gets to some points and just sits there. There is no "time remaining" indicator, just a progress bar that does not move. It just leaves you waiting without a clue as to why. I installed this on my Vista machine but had several execution errors so I loaded it on my XP - MCE- machine. It took 35-45 minutes on each. I still had errors but not as many on the XP machine. So be patient when starting the installation process. Checking Help/About, there are over 30 sub programs listed. That may be the reason for some of the long install times.
Data-Copy
This service gives lots of option for burning and coping data. It uses some familiar packages like Creator Classic, BackOnTrack, and Video Copy & Convert. The Video Copy & Convert package suggested my RADEON X600 Display Adaptor might be out of date. The driver is dated 1/10/2006. I'll have to check on that. With all these features you can make bootable discs, iso, cue, and bin formats as well as making labels and coping discs.
Videos - Movies
Capture Video feature will accept input from a video camera or scanner by using the Roxio Media Import program and you can chose photo or video input. The Plug & Burn feature did not give me enough information to use. I could not tell it where to find a file or video to use as a source. Maybe it only works with the recently captured data. The Edit Video Automatically category uses CineMagic and aborts with a runtime error when I try to add photos. The Edit Video - Advanced feature uses VideoWave and seems to take a long time to import the photos for a 200 picture slide show. Sometimes it quits with a runtime error. Media Manager aborted with a runtime error when I tried to Browse and Manage Media feature. So I had limited success with these features.
I had developed a 60 min. video in Adobe Première on my Vista laptop. For some reason I could not make a useable DVD; it wouldn't play or duplicate. I brought files into Roxio and was able to make a finished product that functioned normally. When I used Roxio to make the final DVD presentation, I found that the ability to put a menu slide on the front end very limited. I could only put a short caption and couldn't figure out how to cause it to make two lines that showed up on the end product.
Audio - Music
I made audio of a project in another package and was able to save just the audio as a wav file. I imported this 80 minute file into Roxio Sound Editor and was able to edit out the portions of the audio I did not want, and broke it into 11 clips/tracks. There were capabilities to fade tracks in and out, which were nice. I tried to give each track a title and an artist, yet when I burned a CD, none of that information seemed to be there. I'm willing to accept the fact that in time I might have found the solution, but it should not have been so hard. When the files were complete I was able to make a 63 minute music CD that was very acceptable, so my efforts were successful.
Photos
The Import process here is the same Media Import used for Videos. You can edit pictures using the PhotoSuite. This process aborted when I tried to open a file. I used the Create Slideshows feature and added photos starting by adding all 200 photos. This caused the package to abort, so I added the photos a few at a time. Eventually all photos were imported. The view for previewing these photos wasn't the time line view I am used to. It was difficult to sequence the photos, as I wanted a time sequence rather than a name sequence. Slideshow will let you roll text over any picture slide. For titles I wanted title slides at the front and credit slides at the end. There was not a place to do this in Slideshow. I opened the Edit Photos feature and VideoWave added blank slides to each end. I used them to add my title and credit info. Finally, I wanted to put a 10 min video clip with sound, in the middle of the slideshow. In VideoWave I added the avi video file. The first time I tried this I was not able to put the clip where I wanted to. Later, in a smaller test file, the clip inserted where I chose to place it.
Conclusion
If you are looking for one package that has all the tools in it, Roxio is a good one to consider. Based on Roxio's experience in the market, I'm sure they will have fixes for some of the problems - and Roxio would become able to handle some of the situations that I encountered. I am particularly excited about the possibilities of using some of the audio capabilities of this package to capture some of my vinyl collection - records and tapes.
Customer Rating: Summary: Roxio Creator 09 Comment: I had Nero and decided to try Roxio instead. Roxio 09 is much less buggy, but there is a price to pay. It offers much less features and control. Nero customer support was not helpful all the time. I have not had the need to try the Roxio customer support yet I'm still learning the program.
Customer Rating: Summary: Tech deficient people can use it too Comment: For years I've been able to get senior members of the family to use Roxio software and not just rely on device functions. There is a lot more control and versatility with using media editing programs. With the holidays nearing my father finally dumped his 8mm camcorder and got a digital one. It also reminded us that it was time to deal with the tapes and get rid of the 8mm player tapes. I bought him the Ultimate version since he had already learned Creator 8 and wouldn't have to struggle so much with a new software program. The Ultimate box includes a video adaptor. At home we've been processing the tapes and getting them into shape. Version 8 didn't have the video chapter cutting software. This is even easier to use than the previous version. It has taken little time to add the id titles for all the clips. I can see that VideoWave has added more effects, but are main focus has been on getting the tapes done. Later we can go back and make changes.
Video file size can add up fast so we've been taking advantage of the file compression. This has lessened the number of disks we used for backup. We are also preparing some holiday dvd gifts by copying dvds. The enhanced burning speed is welcome since we have to burn a large number. We chose the dvd-vcr format since everyone has some sort of dvd player. We also plan to show some custom made clips during the holiday gathering. I still like that Roxio keeps the average user in mind. Many members of my family get frustrated with heary tech terms. I would recommend this program for almost everyone and not worry about your technical experience.
Customer Rating: Summary: Roxio Creator 2009 is easy to use Comment: Roxio Creator 2009 is a great, comprehensive program to use. It allows you to burn DVDs, burn CDs, edit photos, copy disks, and it supports portable music players and HD. A cool feature is the ability to upload a file directly into YouTube for all the YouTube buffs. My favorite feature is how easy it is to make a slideshow, add music and transitions, and burn a DVD to play on a DVD Player. This is definitely a fun way to torture friends with vacation pictures. Give it a try.
Customer Rating: Summary: Beware of the Bloat - No Custom Install Comment: Roxio Creator 2009
Roxio Creator 2009 does not have a custom/selective install capability. You have to load the entire package whether or not you need all its features! It takes around 1.5 gig on the hard drive. Some of Roxio's features probably duplicate those provided by Windows Vista and therefore are unnecessary. A selective install feature would really help this product.
I opted to install CyberLink Power2Go CD & DVD burning software, 39.95 from [...]. It has everything I need for now. It uses approximately 140 meg on the hard drive.
