Historical Novel Society memberships include four quarterly issues of the Historical Novels Review and two semiannual issues of Solander, for a total of six issues per year. The Historical Novels Review aims to review every new work of adult historical fiction released in the U.S. or the U.K. Selected titles from Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are also reviewed, as are selected children's/young adult and historical nonfiction titles, for a grand total of over 800 reviews per year. It is the only magazine of its kind, the best and most complete guide to the latest historical fiction in the world.
Besides book reviews, we also feature author interviews, market updates, feature articles, and letters from subscribers. We have recently featured interviews with Elizabeth Kostova (The Historian), David Anthony Durham (Pride of Carthage), Margaret George (the upcoming Helen of Troy), and Susanna Clarke (Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell). The magazine appears quarterly in February, May, August, and November.
Solanderis published twice yearly, in May and November. It is a magazine of interviews, articles, short fiction, and comment--the only such magazine in the world for enthusiasts of historical fiction. Recent topics in Solander have included marketing historical fiction creatively; profiles of prominent publishers; interviews with Wilbur Smith, Diana Gabaldon, and Margaret Elphinstone; regular columns by Candace Robb and literary agent Irene Goodman; the best in historical short fiction; and much more!
Memberships run by calendar year. When you place your order, you'll receive all magazines published thus far in the current year, plus forthcoming magazines as they are published. Orders placed in November and December will be held for the following year's membership. Because magazines are shipped from the United Kingdom, please allow several weeks for delivery. Libraries, schools, and other institutions may place orders at the same rate as individuals.
