Customer Rating: Summary: DVD offers second 30-minute bonus program! Comment: I agree with other reviewers that this is a great DVD, especially for little ones. I shared it with my infant daughter once or twice a week three months prior to our Disney World vacation. Even at nine months, when we recently visited, she seemed to recognize the characters and music and while other babies her age cried or hid their faces from the costumed characters, my daughter readily hugged them and shook with excitement. I give this DVD much of the credit.
I am writing this review to alert buyers that, even though it is not mentioned anywhere on the packaging, this DVD edition also offers a terrific half-hour bonus program. On the Language selection page, one has the option of choosing "French" instead of "English." This launches a completely different 30-minute program filmed at Disneyland Paris and even features a couple of different songs. Of course, the voices and lyrics are in French, but it's a terrific glimpse at the Paris park in the early 1990s and is equally fun for my infant daughter.
This "special feature" is unique to this one singalong DVD, but I am thrilled to see it included. It doubles the running time and makes it really worth while as a purchase. However, it is so well hidden (on the Language menu), that I'll bet that half of the people who own this DVD don't even realize that it's there, waiting to be enjoyed.
Customer Rating: Summary: best sing a long movie ever! Comment: My kid just loves this movie she sings and dances along and watches it over and over! So Fun for the whole family we like to watch it on the plane on the way to Disney too! FUN FUN FUN
Customer Rating: Summary: Great for young toddlers! Comment: My 19 month old is obsessed with this DVD! He loves the songs and the characters, and sees new things each time he watches it.
Yes, it's cheesy and essentially a 30 minute commercial for Disneyland, but it's not nearly as annoying as a lot of the kids' DVDs out there.
Also, the French version is quite entertaining - if you understand French, it's interesting to see how some of the songs are translated.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great fun - plus an easter egg! Comment: The other reviewers have good points, but I don't think anyone has mentioned what I think is the most fun feature on this DVD! But more on that in a moment.
First, the people giving negative reviews have two good points - this thing IS a little dated, and the song "Grim Grinning Ghosts" can be scary for young kids. (I can't remember any other major criticisms...) Having said that, I really like the return to 1989: Big hair! Guys wearing pink (non-ironically)! The PeopleMover! Party Gras! It's a little like watching one of those World of Disney shows from the Sixties. My kids didn't like the song "GGG" at first, but I watch it with them, and we discuss the relevant issues - that it's just pretend, that there are people in those costumes, and that sometimes it's fun to be scared. I think they'll be ready for the Mansion next time we go to Anaheim...
But there's so much more to love on this video! The songs are fun, and it's great to learn some of these lyrics to sing along at the park. I can no longer walk down Main Street without humming the catchy second song on the disc, and the up-tempo "Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah" is cool, complete with the requisite horrible rap break in the middle (so common in the Eighties). And since it was 1989, they were also trying to cram Roger Rabbit down our throats at every opportunity (sorry, Roger - great attraction, but you're not a "classic")!
The most fun, though, is sort of an easter egg, and I haven't heard anyone else mention it. On the "set up" menu for the DVD, it gives you the option to switch the language to French. Haven't tried it? I don't blame you, I don't speak French either. But when you choose that option, instead of just a translation, you get an entirely different video - shot at Disneyland Paris! It's a beautiful park, and the video shows some things I've heard of, but never seen, like Alice's Curious Labyrinth and the dragon lying in wait beneath the castle. Plus, the Phantom Manor song features the mysterious Phantom himself, and a real treat for Haunted Mansion geeks: a beating-heart Bride face character!
To sum up:
* Yes, the video is dated and a bit dorky, but there are those of us that embrace that sort of thing.
* The Haunted Mansion is creepy, so don't leave your kids there alone.
* Roger Rabbit was never as successful a franchise as Disney had hoped.
* Disneyland looks pretty much the same today as it did twenty years ago (except Tomorrowland, which does not look as modern now as it did then).
* And even if you don't speak French, Disneyland Paris is a great place to spend part of your day.
Customer Rating: Summary: Getting Ready for Disney! Comment: Wow! What a great video to prepare your children for the Big trip to Disney! This video highlights songs and characters and Disney attractions. My 4 and 2 year old boys love to watch this DVD and in my opinion has well prepared them for our trip. Just wish it was a bit more up to date. The video features Roger Rabbit...and early 90's attire and hairstyles. (At least the styles give my wife and I a good laugh!)
