Ideal for a household with a large cat or more than one cat, this big, self-cleaning litter box eliminates most odors while keeping the litter pleasingly fresh for tabby. It's ingenious in design: a cat entering the box triggers a sensor; the sensor sets a timer that counts off 10 minutes; then a rake runs through the litter, scooping out clumps and depositing them in a plastic container at the box's end; the container is automatically sealed until the next cat visit, when the raking cycle opens the container for another deposit. (Twelve reusable, disposable containers are included, each 13 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches deep.) The litter box can be plugged into a wall socket (AC adapter included) or operated on eight D-cell batteries (not included). It comes with a durable carpeted ramp that leads a cat into the box and cleans its paws on the way out. For safety, the rake stops and reverses at the slightest touch if an object gets in the way. If a cat re-enters the box before the initial 10 minutes have elapsed, the timer automatically resets. The litter box is made of hard plastic and measures 29 inches long, 8-7/8 inches high, and 16-3/4 inches wide. For proper operation, it requires premium, clumping litter but does not need as much as a nonautomated litter box of the same size. For cleaning, the litter tray can be detached. Summary: Works Like It's Supposed To
Comment: I am pleased. We have been using Litter Maid Automatic litter boxes since they first came out. Probably bought 10 or so over the last 10 years. We have 4 working now - this is the only "Mega" one. We have Maine Coon cats - and this one is bigger so they have more room. It also has the "old style" rake - not the junk one in the "elite" models. (Do NOT Buy an Elite Model - they are junk) You will still have to scrape out some of the buildup on the bottom and scrape the rake out once in a while - but nothing is perfect. There is a scraper scoop provided with the litter box. Overall it is a good product. We will continue to buy more as ours wear out.....

Summary: Not sure it is designed for loose poop!
Comment: We have four cats. Purchased this item in the hopes of using it during extended vacations. Elevated it on an old counter top, cut the bottom out of one of the plastic poop receptacles and the counter top, and put a garbage can with plastic liner underneath the counter to catch the poop. Removed all the old style litter boxes as directed. Experimented for a couple of weeks with this set up in our garage. Some poop ended up in the installed garbage can, but some of our cats decided it was better just to poop on the garage floor. Also, notice that alot of the Littermaid poop got trapped between the removal teeth and the end wall when the unit performed the dumping process. This resulted in manual cleaning of the teeth and the end wall. Not sure it is worth the extra work to keep it clean.

Summary: Tragically Flawed
Comment: I would recommend avoiding this litter box at all costs. The premise and set up make sense...However, it is executed poorly. The rake stopped working after 4 days. The bucket that pops up had the removable lid come off and it dumped litter on top and then all over the side.

Summary: Doesn't live up to the hype!!!!!!!!!
Comment: I do like the idea of not scooping litter. But now instead of scooping litter I am always leveling out the litter so the cat litter pan will stop running all of the time. If you have a cat that does their business and walks away without scooping any of the litter with their paw this is perfect for you. If your cat does scoop the litter and they happen to make a small hill of litter this cat litter try will run constantly until you level out the litter. If this happens while you are at work don't expect your cat to wait for you to get home to fix the litter pan. Might want to keep some Resolve on hand.

Summary: Good idea, poor execution
Comment: I have two cats and thought this machine would be a great helper with unappealing litter box chores. Well, I spent more time scraping "stuff" out of the rake than I previously did just scooping and dumping with my traditional litter box. The rake would adhere to the solid waste while attempting to carry it into the waste receptacle. This would make the machine get stuck going back and forth repeatedly trying to dump the waste. Also, this machine is pretty loud. I had to turn it off in the evening so it wouldn't scare everyone in the middle of the night. One of my cats hated the screeching sound of the machine so much that she resorted to using one of my secondary bedrooms as a litter box to avoid the machine (she has NEVER done this before and she's almost 7 years old). I returned the machine to Amazon and have happily gone back to scooping 2-3 times a day.
