Editorial Reviews:

Written for non-specialist users of electric motors and drives, this book explains how electric drives work and compares the performance of the main systems, with many examples of applications. The author's approach - using a minimum of mathematics - has made this book equally popular as an outline for professionals and an introductory student text.

* First edition (1990) has sold over 6000 copies.
Drives and Controls on the first edition: 'This book is very readable, up-to-date and should be extremely useful to both users and o.e.m. designers. I unhesitatingly recommend it to any busy engineer who needs to make informed judgements about selecting the right drive system.'
New features of the second edition: * New section on the cycloconverter drive. * More on switched relectance motor drives. * More on vector-controlled induction motor drives. * More on power switching devices. * New 'question and answer' sections on common problems and misconceptions. * Updating throughout. Electric Motors and Drives is for non-specialist users of electric motors and drives. It fills the gap between specialist textbooks (which are pitched at a level which is too academic for the average user) and the more prosaic 'handbooks' which are filled with useful detail but provide little opportunity for the development of any real insight or understanding. The book explores most of the widely-used modern types of motor and drive, including conventional and brushless d.c., induction motors (mains and inverter-fed), stepping motors, synchronous motors (mains and converter-fed) and reluctance motors.

Summary: Electric Motors and Drives
Comment: Excellent Excellent work.

I do manufacturing/lean engineering. Geared perfectly to technicaly apt readers with little electrical specific knowledge. I've refered back to this several times when dealing with AC and DC motors, with and without drives, connected to rotary equipment, motion controls, bridge cranes and material handleing, traction....

Straightforward and honest technical information that allowed me to understand and apply drives and motors and make the informed decisions that heresay, sales reps, and outright misinformation can make so difficult.

Summary: Good overview of motor fundamentals, short on circuits
Comment: I am a brushless dc drive engineer and I originally purchased this book looking for some deep insight into the inner workings of motor physics and the nuances of circuit operations... and of course, at the right price. This is the wrong book for my purpose, but it was worth a shot for the price, and I now have a decent book for an overview of different motor characteristics.

This book goes over each type of motor, proper applications for each type of motor, and the general methods used to drive them. As the other reviews state, there isn't a lot of math involved, however, the concepts are clearly presented from a system perspective.

If you are a systems or manufacturing engineer trying to find the right type of motor to suite an application, this book is for you. If you are a circuit-level engineer looking to maximize efficiency with waveforms while using economical design techniques, this book is not for you. I would give a recommendation, but I haven't found that book yet.

Good luck,

- J

Summary: Truly remarkable book
Comment: This truly remarkable book has done much to elucidate the fundamental principles of motors and drives in the plainest terms. The focus is on DC motor and induction motor. It also covers stepper motor and synchronous motor. Its explanation of the induction motor is second to none. The mechanisms are explained clearly not shrouded in the complex mathematical formulation.

I was initially disappointed to find scanty discussion on brushless DC motor, but soon I realize that once I understand induction motor, synchronous motor which BLDC motor is a subclass is relatively trivia.

Summary: Best drive book!
Comment: By far the best drive book I bought. I recommend this book to everyone. From beginner to expert. It is well explained.

Summary: Electric Motors And Drives
Comment: It would be difficult to overstate how really good this book is. If you work with motors or want to know more about how electric motors work, BUY THIS BOOK. There is just enough math to make the explanations understandable without getting swamped (for an in-depth mathematical treatment, see Electric Machinery and Transformers (The Oxford Series in Electrical and Computer Engineering)).

I especially found the chapters on the fundamentals of motor magnetics (Chapter 1), DC motors (Chapter 3), and induction motors (Chapter 5) the most enlightening because they clearly explain why/how motors work. These chapters only make the book well worth it's price.

I would like to have seen a few example circuit schematics for a dc and/or an ac drive but these are probably topics better left for another book.
